In light of the problems faced last year while immersing Lord Ganesha's idols into the city lakes, Ganesh mandals have asked the BMC to finish desilting the lakes before the festivals.

In 2010, BMC had not carried out the desilting work thoroughly. It was done in haste.

Sheetal Talao in Kurla was one of the worst spots due to the incomplete work. As such, the president of the Ganeshotsav Samanvay Samiti has asked the civic authority to speed up the work before September kicks in.

Narendra Dahibavkar of the Ganeshotsav Samanvay Samiti said, "There is a garden which is being constructed by the BMC adjacent to the lake and we do not want the construction to hamper the festival in any way.

The silt also creates a problem for us. We hope that they finish the work well before the festival on September 1."

Deputy Municipal Commiss- ioner Dr K Kshirsagar, in-charge of the festival, said, "We would begin the desilting well in advance so as not to create problems while immersing idols."

The BMC has allotted Rs 24 lakh for the desilting of Sheetal Lake, one of the largest and most popular locations for immersion.

Around 350 mandals with tall idols while 12,000 smaller idols are immersed in the lake in Kurla. BMC's Standing Committee Chairman Rahul Shewale said, "The work would begin in four-five days.

Meanwhile, the desilting work at Shivaji Lake in Bhandup, where around 110 mandals go for immersions, is underway already."

Immersion spots
Sheetal Lake, Powai Lake, Shivaji Lake, Bandra Lake, Charai Lake are some of the popular immersion spots.
