In order to ensure its students' safety, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to instal 4,064 CCTV cameras in 381 civic schools across the city. It has allocated Rs 5 crore for the project in its budget announced on Friday. According to BMC sources, the surveillance system would act as a precautionary measure and help to keep a check on undesirable activities on school premises. It would also aid in investigations of untoward incidents and serve as circumstantial evidence in such cases, a source added.

Speaking to mid-day, Sainath Durge, Yuva Sena member and part of BMC's education committee, said, "Earlier, we had raised the demand for a surveillance system in civic schools. It's extremely important to ensure that students are safe. Installation of CCTV cameras will act as a deterrent for security breaches. At the same time, in case of any untoward incident, we can always check the CCTV footage to verify facts. We are glad that the BMC has taken this demand into consideration and allocated funds for the project."

Meanwhile, a major chunk of the money allocated for education (Rs 277.67crore) will go into repairs, upgrading facilities and reconstruction of municipal school buildings. Of the total 467 municipal school buildings, many are already undergoing repairs. In the upcoming year, work on another 63 would be completed. New schools would also be constructed on 12 plots and seven school playgrounds would be developed.
