“Being in the government, the BJP will also receive donations, among other sources of white money. But what about the parties that have been out of power?” said a leader in the BMC.
He cited the example of the beleaguered president of the Mumbai unit of a national party — this particular leader was facing acute problems in raising funds. “Companies and builders have stopped entertaining this party, so the Mumbai unit has decided to raise funds through candidates in exchange for an election ticket,” the leader said.
“Our corporators have the money, but they won’t dish it out in white,” he said, adding that even the ruling party’s candidates, who are richer than his party’s corporators, will face a similar problem.
