Doctors and Mumbai Crime Branch point to more discrepancies in the shootout encounter of Haryana gangster Sandeep Gadoli, resulting in the appointment of a Special Investigation Team

With the Mumbai police appointing a Special Investigation Team to probe the Gurgaon police’s killing of a gangster at an Andheri hotel on February 7, doctors who treated the policemen allegedly injured in the incident said their wounds were minor.

The Gurgaon police team has been detained in the city for a week following the encounter killing, which the family has claimed is a cold-blooded murder. A team of eight policemen headed by Inspector Praduman Yadav shot Sandeep Gadoli thrice and claimed it was in self-defence.

Even as the police asked an Assistant Commissioner of Police to probe the incident, the family of Gadoli on Friday filed a writ petition in the Bombay High Court seeking a fair probe. (See accompanying report)

Doctors at Cooper Hospital told mid-day on Friday that the policemen came at around 7.45 pm on Sunday, after which they were treated for minor wounds and discharged. With the alleged encounter having occurred at 11.05 am on Sunday according to the Gurgaon police, questions are also raised about the delay in seeking treatment. The Gurgaon police claimed their men had sustained gunshot wounds.

The two allegedly injured policemen – identified from records only as Vikram Singh and Paramjeet – were taken to the casualty department (OPD ward numbers 9501 and 9502 respectively). Policemen from MIDC police station accompanied the two, according to hospital records.

"They were attended to by the casualty medical officer and didn’t need admission," Dr Ramesh Chaturvedi, Dean of RN Cooper hospital, told mid-day. "Both had sustained minor injuries and were discharged right after primary treatment."

He stopped short of saying they were not gunshot wounds. "We have submitted our report to the concerned police officials. It being a sensitive case, I can't reveal anymore," said Chaturvedi.

SIT formed
Earlier in the day, the Mumbai police formed an SIT to investigate the circumstances of Gadoli’s death. Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) KMM Prasanna told mid-day, "The SIT has been formed on the orders of the Joint CP. ACP Santacruz division will head it, and have two police inspectors to investigate the encounter and verify their claims. A report will be submitted every two weeks."

Another senior officer from the Crime Branch said, "There are too many loopholes in their theory so we formed the SIT. When we interrogated each of them in different rooms, their statements were inconsistent."

This officer said that CCTV footage shows a Gurgaon policeman tugging at the wire of the CCTV camera facing the room where the encounter happened.

"But there are 16 CCTV cameras in the hotel which all are intersected and this action is recorded in another camera," said the officer. "They have not even informed the Mumbai police about the encounter on record. We also suspect injuries of the Gurgaon cops are superficial."
