Ambedkar book brings Karachi, Mumbai together

In these times of cross-border tension, the Mumbai Karachi Friendship Forum hoped to thaw hostilities with the neighbouring country by launching a book that was written in India, but printed in Pakistan. A reprint of Babasaheb Ambedkar’s biography, which was written by Tanaji Balaji Kharavtekar in 1946, was released yesterday to mark the 160th birthday of the architect of the Indian Constitution.

MU students to get book
The book is going to be distributed among students of Mumbai University. Vice Chancellor Sanjay Deshmukh, who was present at the launch said, “Initiatives like these can do wonders. The jurisdiction of Mumbai actually extended till Karachi earlier. I’ll make sure this book is read by each and every student.”

Tapas Bhate, member of the forum said, “The colonial architecture and heritage of both the cities are very similar. Goans and Maharashtrians still live in Karachi. There is so much we can learn from each other.”

Necessary to know past
The friendship forum was formed by the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) earlier this year. “Babasaheb’s biography was written here but printed in Karachi. People need to know and remember where we have come from,” added Bhate.
