NCP leader Nimbalkar regrets leaving Sharad Pawar’s side, cites worker safety

Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar, a senior leader of Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), expressed regret for abandoning Sharad Pawar but explained that his action was motivated by the desire to defend his people. His comments come as talk grows over his possible return to Sharad Pawar's NCP ahead of the state legislature elections. Speaking at a Phaltan celebration commemorating his 75th birthday, Nimbalkar disclosed that he chose to affiliate with Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar's group to protect his workers' interests, but those promises were not kept. "I feel sorry for abandoning Sharad Pawar, but I did it to preserve the safety of my employees. However, that has not occurred," stated Nimbalkar, a former chairperson of the state legislative council. In July 2023, Ajit Pawar and several other MLAs joined the Shiv Sena-BJP administration, precipitating a rift in Sharad Pawar's NCP. In response to reports of his prospective return to the Sharad Pawar-led NCP, Nimbalkar said, "How can I face (Sharad) Pawar saheb, who made me a minister in 2009 though I was not even a legislator? I feel guilty about deserting him. But I did so to ensure the security of my workers. But that doesn't seem to be happening." Nimbalkar further stated that he informed Ajit Pawar and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis that he would not campaign for BJP MP Ranjit Nimbalkar in the recent Lok Sabha election. Looking ahead to the delimitation process, Nimbalkar stated that the priority would be to increase the number of seats in metropolitan regions such as Mumbai, Pune, and Nashik, which would account for approximately 125 seats. He pointed out that a simple majority in the state assembly requires 144 lawmakers. "Mumbai, Pune, Nashik and nearby areas will account for about 125 seats. You need 144 for a simple majority," he said. Nimbalkar is the father-in-law of Rahul Narwekar, Speaker of the State Assembly. He added that he would make a decision about his political future after consulting his employees. Previously Deputy CM Ajit Pawar too had expressed his regret over fielding his wife Sunetra against his cousin Supriya Sule from Baramati during the Lok Sabha Elections 2024.

Avadesh Dubey, an IITian, allegedly died in a train accident on April 23

President's office intervenes in Mumbai rail commuter death case

In a significant development regarding the Mumbai commuter death case, the President of India’s office has stepped in to address growing concerns raised by the victim's family. Avadhesh Dubey, a student of IIT Patna, lost his life in a railway accident on April 23, 2024, while travelling on a local train in Mumbai. Avadhesh's death was caused due to door-blocking, train delays and delays in golden-hour medical response.  Rajesh Dubey, the victim's father, has worked relentlessly to advocate for justice, citing serious failures in safety measures and procedural delays in his appeals to various government officials, including the Commissioner of Police, Chief Minister's Office, and the Railway Board. He demanded an FIR be filed against unknown individuals responsible for door-blocking, as well as action against those responsible for delays in medical treatment that resulted in his son's death. In a recent media statement, the President's Secretariat acknowledged the gravity of the issue and conveyed the appeal to the Chairman of the Railway Board, urging quick action and providing a comprehensive report on the situation. The directive, written by Gautam Kumar, Under Secretary to the President's Secretariat, emphasised the importance of quick justice and accountability. The involvement comes at a time when the Dubey family, still grieving the loss of their son, has expressed various concerns about the safety of Mumbai's local trains, pushing for significant reforms. These include converting 12-car trains to 15-coach trains during peak hours, improving platform wait management, implementing auto-door closing technologies, and upgrading medical facilities at railway stations to handle emergencies. Avadhesh Dubey, a talented student doing an MBA at IIT Patna, was on his way to perform professional duties at Nair Hospital when the unfortunate occurrence occurred. Despite numerous attempts, the family has yet to receive the items lost in the accident, including Avadhesh's wallet and phone. The President's administration has stated unequivocally that the railway authorities must provide a direct report to the family on the activities done. This critical move by the highest office of the country demonstrates the gravity of the situation and the necessity for prompt resolution. Rajesh Dubey and his family continue to seek justice, urging the government to take severe safety measures on Mumbai's busy local train network to prevent similar events in the future. The railway tragedy that killed their son exposed systemic inadequacies that require immediate attention and improvements.

Mumbai lakes supplying water to the city reach 99.11 per cent capacity

The BMC stated on Sunday that the water levels in Mumbai's seven reservoirs, which supply the city with potable water, have reached 99.11 per cent. Based on data from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the combined water stock of the Mumbai lakes stands at 14,34,439 million litres at present, or 99.11 per cent of their capacity. Mumbai gets its water from the Upper and Middle Vaitarnas, Bhatsa, Tansa, Vihar, Tulsi, and Modak Sagar. The civic body's data on the Mumbai lakes indicates that Tansa's water level is 98.65 per cent. 98.11 per cent of the water stock is accessible at Modak-Sagar. Middle Vaitarna is 99.47 per cent, Upper Vaitarna is 100 per cent, Bhatsa is 98.97 per cent, Vihar is 100 per cent, and Tulsi is 98.94 per cent of the available useful water. In the wake of heavy rains, one more lake supplying water to Mumbai, Middle Vaitarna Lake, started overflowing on July 4. Lakes Vihar and Modak Sagar began to flood on July 25 due to persistently high rains. Around 4 pm on July 24, Tansa Lake started to overflow, increasing the amount of water stored in all seven reservoirs by 17 days in a single day. Approximately 400 million gallons of water are supplied to Mumbai by Tansa Lake, which is situated in the Shahpur region of Thane. On July 26, 2024, it overflowed. One of the two lakes that directly feed water to the BMC, Tulsi Lake, started to overflow on July 20 at around 8:30 am, mimicking the event that occurred on the same day last year at 1:28 pm, according to the civic body. Mumbai rains: Light rainfall expected today The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light spells of rainfall in Mumbai on Sunday, as per the latest Mumbai weather update. Mumbai weather updates: City swelters at 32 deg C; AQI remains 'satisfactory'

The current dry spell in Mumbai has made way for the 'October heat' to take over the reins; on Sunday morning, according to the latest Mumbai weather update, the temperatures have remained a degree above the normal temperatures. The latest Mumbai weather update by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that the city and suburbs will see a "partly cloudy sky with possibility of drizzle" for the next 24 hours. It added that the maximum temperature is expected to be around 33 degrees Celcius while the minimum temperature is likely to be around 25 degrees Celsius. However, as per the Mumbai weather update, the city's temperature at 9.50 am was around 32.8 degrees Celcius with the relative humidity at 100 per cent. The sun rose at 06:30 AM and will set at 06:23 PM. Mumbai had a warm day on October 5, with temperatures slightly above usual at both Colaba and Santacruz stations. According to meteorological statistics, Colaba had a maximum temperature of 33.0°C, which was 1.1°C more than average. The minimum temperature in the area was 26.0°C, 0.7°C higher than typical. Santacruz, on the other hand, experienced a maximum temperature of 32.8°C, 0.4°C more than normal, and a low temperature of 25.3°C, 0.6°C higher than average. The relative humidity in Colaba was 85% in the morning and 58% in the evening, while Santacruz had 86% in the morning and 64% in the evening. No rain was observed in any area. Mumbai weather update: City's AQI 'good' On Saturday (October 5), the Central Pollution Control Board's SAMEER app, in its latest Mumbai weather update, said the city's air quality continued to be 'good' with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 52 at 9.50 am. The SAMEER App dashboard, on Sunday, showed that a maximum of the areas either had a 'good' or 'satisfactory' AQI except Borivali and Bandra Kurla Complex which reported a 'moderate' AQI of 104 and 102 respectively. Navi Mumbai, according to data collated by the SAMEER app, recorded 'satisfactory' air quality with an AQI of 85. Nerul, which had been recording 'moderate' AQI consistently, recorded an AQI of 83. Meanwhile, Thane too recorded a 'good' AQI of 72. The air quality index from 0 to 100 is considered 'good', 100 to 200 'moderate', 200 to 300 'poor', 300 to 400 'very poor' and from 400 to 500 or above 'severe'. The main causes of air pollution in Mumbai are waste burning, industrial activity, construction dust, and vehicle emissions. These sources generate fine particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) into the environment, which can penetrate the lungs and cause heart problems, respiratory diseases, and other health issues. There are various projects in place to improve Mumbai's air quality. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has implemented laws on car emissions, regulated dust areas at construction sites, and incentives for electric vehicles, among other things. The Maharashtra government has also launched the "Clean Air Action Plan," which aims to cut emissions from different sources.

Rahul Gandhi: Shivaji statue fell because BJP’s ideology was wrong

Promising to scrap the 50 per cent cap on reservations, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday attacked the BJP government, saying there was no use of bowing before Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj after destroying the Constitution and institutions in the country. Gandhi on Saturday unveiled a new statue of Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha empire, in Kolhapur. Later in the day, he addressed the Samvidhan Sammelan there, vowing that Congress and its allies in the INDIA bloc will also bring out laws to enable a caste-based census. “We will ensure in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha that the 50 per cent cap on reservation is removed and no power can stop it. Removing this 50 per cent limit is necessary to protect the Constitution,” he said. The statement was seen as his party’s main poll plank for the Assembly elections due in a matter of weeks in Maharashtra. Gandhi criticised the ruling BJP over the recent collapse of a Shivaji statue at the Rajkot fort in Sindhudurg district, saying this was an omen that the ruling party’s “intentions were not right”. The 35-foot statue in Sindhudurg had been unveiled by the PM on December 4, 2023, on the occasion of Navy Day. It collapsed on August 26, 2024. “There is no use of bowing before bowing before Shivaji Maharaj after scaring people, destroying the Constitution and institutions in the country,” Gandhi said on Saturday, in reference to PM Narendra Modi, who had apologised for the statue’s collapse. “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is not just a name or a king. For us, he is our deity. Today, I bow my head at his feet and apologise to my deity,” Modi had said on August 30 during his visit to Maharashtra. The PM was also in the state on Saturday, inaugurating several projects across the state ahead of the state polls.  Gandhi further said the Indian Constitution was a manifestation of what Shivaji Maharaj stood for, and that the Maratha warrior king’s message to the world was that the country belongs to everyone. “Their [ruling party’s] intentions were not right. The statue gave them the message that if you build Shivaji Maharaj’s statue, you have to follow his ideals. Which is why the statue collapsed, because their ideology is wrong,” he said. Sena UBT holds maha job fair, says wants youth to be independent

Our Shiv Sena is committed to providing employment opportunities to the youth and empowering them to become independent. In contrast, the ‘khokhe sarkar’ (mocking the ruling party) has reversed the progress symbolised by ‘Mulgi Shikli, Pragati Zhali’ (girls’ education spells progress),” said Uddhav Thackeray, chief of Shiv Sena (UBT), while addressing the youth at a mega job fair organised by his party on Saturday. Mocking the Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) further, Thackeray said, “They are instead handing out Rs 1,500 to girls/sisters and leaving them sitting at home.” With an eye on the upcoming assembly elections, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) organised a mega job fair, putting the spotlight on unemployment in Maharashtra. Thackeray attributed the alleged “unemployment crisis” to the “miserable failure” of the Mahayuti Alliance government currently in power. Taking a jab at the ruling Mahayuti alliance, Thackeray said, “In the next one-and-a-half months, our government will be in power. Once that happens, all these ‘gaddars’ (traitors) in the current government will be jobless and unemployed. While we are helping the youth get jobs, Anil (referring to Anil Parab), these traitors should not be given jobs at all. They will come to us seeking employment as they won’t have any after shifting companies and industries out of Maharashtra, but we will not entertain them.” Speaking at the event, senior Shiv Sena leader and MLC Anil Parab echoed the concerns about unemployment under the Mahayuti government. “Unemployment has skyrocketed, and many industries have been shifted to neighbouring states,” Parab said. Parab expressed confidence that the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government would soon return to power in Maharashtra. “Once we are in power, our government will prioritise providing jobs to the youth and filling government vacancies,” he said. Parab also said, “We have already confirmed 12,000 jobs through this fair. As candidates arrive, their documents will be reviewed, and they will be shortlisted based on qualifications. No one will be disappointed. This is just the first phase of my promise; we will continue organising such fairs every year,” he added. Major companies like Hinduja, HDFC, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Edelweiss Tokio Insurance, SBI, Bajaj, Tata AIG, Airtel, ICICI Lombard, 90Plus management and Dr Reddy’s Foundation were present at the fair. Selected candidates received on-the-spot shortlisting letters. “These shortlisting letters are not the final job offers,” clarified the committee member. “Once candidates receive these letters, they must report to the respective companies for further recruitment processes. The final offer letters will be issued by the companies after their details have been verified,” he added. Youth speak Komal Kekan, BCA student“They didn’t conduct proper interviews at any of the desks I visited. They just took our details, asked for self-introductions, and after reviewing our resumes and educational documents, and handed us shortlisting letters. They informed us that the second round of interviews will be held at the respective companies on Monday. They gave me an estimated salary figure but mentioned that it might change after the second round. I was shortlisted for the position of Dot Net Developer at Kubic Technology” Omkar Kamble, Insurance professional“I worked at Magma HDI General Insurance for three months in the policy booking department, and I’m currently a telecaller in the verification department at Healthy India Insurance TPA. My current job is in Rabale, but I live in Santa Cruz. When I heard about the job fair, I hoped to find a higher-paying job closer to home. After the interview, they gave me a shortlisting letter, but it mentioned Kalpvriksha Staffing and Recruitment. I’ve been shortlisted as an Insurance Executive, but I’m still unclear about which company it’s for” Chaitali Hadkar, Student “Yes, I am very happy that we are getting this opportunity. I have been shortlisted by Saraswat Bank, but we are a little confused as they haven’t yet told us what position they are hiring us for. PM Modi's visit to city leads to jams on Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway

A major traffic backlog was observed on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway on Saturday morning, with both lanes heavily congested between Versova Bridge and the new Fountain Hotel on NH-48. Activists criticised the authorities for failing to implement effective measures to ensure smooth traffic flow ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mumbai and Thane. Sources in the traffic police of Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar Police told mid-day that the heavy vehicles coming from Gujarat were not diverted by the concerned authorities in Palghar district, leading to complete choke on both the arms. Activist Sushant Patil said all vehicles—heavy and light—were stopped by the traffic police at Fountain Junction. “No vehicles are allowed to go to Thane on the Ghodbundar Road. There were a few ambulances and school buses stuck, too,” Patil told mid-day. “The Palghar Collector should have stopped heavy vehicles at Talasari or Manor, but no such initiative was taken by him, because of which commuters are facing major inconvenience on NH-48,” Patil added. “The traffic officials of MBVV Police were not allowing small vehicles coming from Gujarat to go to Thane via Fountain junction. This traffic chaos is just because of improper decisions taken by Palghar collector and MBVV police,” said Patil, who is planning to write a letter to PMO requesting to take action. Palghar Collector Govind Bodake said, “We had issued a traffic notification to divert the route of the heavy vehicles ahead of PM visit. I am not sure if it was executed by the Palghar police or not.” The Superintendent of Police, Palghar, Balasaheb Patil said, “We had received a clear notification that most of the heavy vehicles coming from Gujarat should be diverted from Manor to Vikramgarh to Wada, and then Nashik Road. The diversions were made but this one is a small stretch, unlike Chinchoti-Bhiwandi road which is wider for heavy vehicles.” The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), MBVV Police, Suhas Bavche, said the notification was issued ahead of PM visit. “At present, more than 100 traffic personnel have been deployed to regulate the traffic highway,” he said. 100Traffic cops have been posted to regulate the traffic on Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway
