Couple ends life over infertility in Thane district

A couple in their 20s died by suicide by hanging themselves at their residence in Thane district, police said on Saturday, PTI reported. According to PTI, the official said the bodies were found hanging in their apartment in the Nadgaon area of Shahapur on Thursday.  The couple were identified as Haresh Ugade (28) and his wife Neelam (25). Neighbours alerted the police, following which the bodies were sent to a government hospital for post-mortem, he said to PTI. As per early reports, the official stated that the couple had entered a suicide pact since they were frustrated that they couldn't bear a child. A case of accidental death has been registered, the official added, as cited by PTI. In another incident reported by Mid-day this year, A physiotherapist and her husband were found dead in Goregaon (West) in Mumbai on the morning of 2nd August.  The police had discovered the body of Dr Rajshree Pedhnekar in the bedroom of her flat on the third floor of a building located behind Lalit Hotel in Goregaon (West). Her husband Kishore was found dead on the premises of the building. Both the victims were 55 years old. Initial investigations as cited by Mid-day, suggested that Kishore strangled his wife to death and then died by suicide. Goregaon police officers said to Mid-day that they first discovered Kishore’s body with a key was kept near his chest.  After establishing his identity, the police entered his flat and found Rajshree’s body lying partially off the bed towards the floor, which suggested that she had been strangled, officers said. During the investigation, it was revealed that Kishore was suffering from depression and some other ailments, the police added.  Dr Rajshree was practicing in a Malad-based health institute. Their son lived in Delhi. Before taking the drastic step, Kishore had sent messages to his relatives, the police informed Mid-day. Back in 2021, a couple were found dead in their Worli flat after finding out they were infected with Covid. The couple's death was ruled death by suicide and not a death from contracting Covid-19. The police said the deceased people — Ajay Kumar, 34, and Sujja S, 30 — hailed from Kerala. The alleged suicide was uncovered after Sujja’s mother from Kerala tried to reach her, but her calls remained unanswered, so she asked a friend of Sujja who lives in the same building to check on her. A police officer said the deaths look like a case of suicide as there were no signs of struggle on the bodies.

Congress welcomes Bombay HC order quashing amended IT rules on fake news

The Congress applauded the Bombay High Court's decision to overturn modified Information Technology guidelines aimed at detecting "fake and false" comments regarding the government on social media. The court ruled that the rules seeking to establish a Fact-Check Unit (FCU) were unlawful. The High Court found that the new guidelines breached the right to equality and freedom of speech and were too vague, potentially leading to a "chilling effect" on individuals and social media sites. The court determined that these rules violated Articles 14, 19, and 19(1)(g) of the Constitution, reported PTI.  According to the report, in a post on X, Congress lawmaker Jairam Ramesh slammed the government's efforts, calling the formation of the FCU a "bizarre joke." He stated, "The non-biological PM is the Father of Falsification. It is a bizarre joke that the government he runs came up with this so-called 'fact check unit.' The Bombay High Court has rightly held it as being unconstitutional. But this is not going to stop Him from spreading His unique brand of lies." The non-biological PM is the Father of Falsification. "Nobody took that fact-check unit seriously, including people in the government. So we welcome the order by the High Court of Bombay," Khera said. Reportedly, the CPI (M) also praised the decision, calling it a triumph for press freedom and free expression. "Welcome decision by the Bombay High Court to stop Modi government's vicious attempt to curb press freedom and free speech," the CPI (M) said in a post on X earlier on Friday. The ruling, delivered by Justice AS Chandurkar, followed a split verdict earlier in January. Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra, the Editors Guild of India, and other media organisations had challenged the regulations, arguing that the rules posed a threat to fundamental rights. The court agreed, quashing the establishment of the Fact-Check Unit.

Lok Sabha Secretariat clarifies room office in Parliament for Sharad Pawar camp

Amid controversy over the allocation of a room in the Parliament House complex to the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, the Lok Sabha Secretariat explained that the room was intended for the group led by Sharad Pawar. On September 11, the Lok Sabha Secretariat's Estate and Heritage Management branch published a list of smaller parties assigned chambers in Parliament House and Samvidhan Sadan (the former Parliament Building). According to the roster, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has been given Room 126-D in Samvidhan Sadan, reported PTI.  According to the report, however, this generated controversy in Maharashtra, where elections are approaching, because the Sharad Pawar-led NCP has more MPs than Ajit Pawar's side. The Lok Sabha Secretariat responded by issuing a clarification the next day, stating that the space was allotted to NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar). The Sharad Pawar side has eight Lok Sabha MPs, while Ajit Pawar has only one. In the Rajya Sabha, Sharad Pawar's party has two seats, while the NCP has three, the news agency report added. Reportedly, furthermore, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT) were assigned adjacent apartments in Samvidhan Sadan. Shiv Sena (UBT) was awarded the room formerly occupied by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which currently has only one Rajya Sabha member. Other parties allocated rooms include the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), a crucial BJP partner, and the Janata Dal (U), a member of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), with its national party status, was also assigned a chamber in Samvidhan Sadan. These room allocations will be in place for the tenure of the 18 Lok Sabha, which was formed in June following the parliamentary elections. Rooms are assigned based on each party's representation in Parliament, allowing for meetings and other activities, the report added. NCP vs NCP The split in NCP happened in 2023 when Ajit Pawar, the nephew of NCP founder Sharad Pawar, rebelled against his uncle Sharad Pawar's leadership and founded his faction inside the party. This move was viewed as a huge setback for the NCP, which had been a dominant force in Maharashtra politics for decades. The Election Commission of India (ECI) later accepted Ajit Pawar's group as the original NCP, causing a formal split within the party. The Sharad Pawar-led faction was forced to change its name to the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar). The schism has significant implications for Maharashtra politics. Both factions are vying for power and influence within the state.

Lancet lists 14 risk factors for dementia

About a year ago, Carol D’Souza’s 95-year-old mother passed away after a decade-long battle with dementia. The diagnosis had come as a shock to the family, residents of Bandra West, who were largely unfamiliar with the condition. She was one of 38,43,118 individuals in the country living with dementia in 2019, and like many other families, Carol and her loved ones are still at a loss for answers about the cause and why it happened. The Lancet Commission’s latest report, released a few days ago, outlines 14 preventable risk factors for dementia. However, as Dr Pawan Ojha, a neurologist at Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, remarks, “We understand how dementia and Alzheimer’s disease occur, but we do not fully grasp why they happen. It’s likely we may never truly understand the underlying reasons.” Answering a question in Lok Sabha in 2022, the health ministry cited the earlier Lancet report and noted that while there is no locally maintained data for dementia, it is estimated to rise to 1,14,22,692 in the country by 2050. Penned by 27 of the world’s leading dementia experts, including Dr Suvarna Alladi at NIMHANS in Bangalore, the Lancet report identifies lower education levels in early childhood as a significant risk factor. Furthermore, it states that in middle age, hearing loss, high cholesterol levels, depression, brain injury, physical inactivity, diabetes, smoking, hypertension, obesity and alcoholism can increase the likelihood of dementia to varying degrees. In later ages, the highest risk of developing dementia is social isolation, followed by air pollution and vision impairment. Dr Alladi could not respond till press time. Explaining the connection between education levels and dementia, Dr Ojha said, “Higher education levels lead to more neural networks and connections in the brain. Individuals with more education develop greater cognitive reserves, thanks to increased synapses and neurotransmitter activity.” Reflections in data When Carol, a psychologist and part of an Alzheimer’s association, was informed about the findings of the research, she said, “My mother was very healthy; she exercised and enjoyed crossword puzzles. Among the risk factors mentioned, she had hypertension, was exposed to air pollution and may have experienced a bit of social isolation after losing her husband.” Considering these factors, Carol’s mother would have had a 10 per cent risk of developing dementia. The Lancet study also noted that the incidence of dementia is higher in women than in men. Another Mumbai resident, Suraj Iyer, whose 78-year-old father is currently grappling with dementia and has forgotten everyone but his wife, said, “It took about four to five years for him to forget. Having a doctor in the family helped us understand what was happening to my father. He is now at an Alzheimer’s care centre.” Unlike Carol, Suraj said he cannot identify any specific risk factors for his father based on the study. “In epidemiological terms, risk factors are variables that increase the likelihood of developing a particular disease. While having certain risk factors does not guarantee that someone will acquire the disease, it does elevate the probability. In the case of dementia, it provides some answers in the form of possibilities,” Dr Ojha said. Act now or suffer later The Lancet Commission report offers solutions to combat the rising incidence of dementia, but these measures cannot be implemented without government intervention. “Our cities are not built to provide safe space to be healthy; even physical activity on Mumbai roads can put someone at risk of getting run over by a car. The recommendations in the report aim to ensure quality of life for citizens. If they are not implemented, we will certainly face a public health emergency in the future,” Dr Ojha said. The report urges countries to address several critical areas: making hearing aids accessible to those with hearing loss, ensuring high-quality education for all and curtailing tobacco consumption. It also recommends promoting exercise and sports, managing high blood pressure from age 40 and treating high cholesterol and obesity early in life. Additionally, it emphasises the need to reduce drinking, prevent social isolation, screen for vision impairment and cut down on air pollution exposure. Dr Ojha, who also works on stroke prevention, added, “From my experience, interacting with bureaucrats, there is a sense that they have the will to act. The government needs to strive to implement these recommendations now that they are on paper.”

A day before poll, Mumbai University senate election postponed

Mumbai University has announced the postponement of its senate elections for nominee representatives, just a day before voting was set to take place. The elections, originally scheduled for September 22, 2024, had been notified on August 3, 2024, under Clause 28(2)(n) of the Maharashtra Public Universities Act of 2016. The university’s circular emphasised the importance of notifying all involved parties—voters, candidates, and election officers—through the appropriate election authorities and polling station heads. The document also stressed that all appointments and responsibilities related to the election process should be fulfilled in a timely manner. Despite this, the abrupt cancellation has raised questions. In response, the voter list will remain valid until further instructions from the government are received, according to the circular.  The notice concluded with a request for all election-related personnel to follow through with their duties as previously outlined.

Mumbai Coastal Road now open seven days a week

The BMC has decided to keep the Mumbai Coastal Road open seven days a week, from 7 am to midnight. Previously, northbound traffic had been closed on weekends before the Ganesh festival. mid-day reported on September 1 that the traffic police division of the Mumbai police recommended this change after receiving complaints from citizens. The weekend closure of northbound traffic led to congestion on Nepean Sea Road, as many motorists were unaware of the restrictions. During the Ganesh festival, the civic body allowed traffic in both directions every day, and they have now opted to continue this practice. However, the road will close from midnight to 7 am for ongoing work; officials state that 92 per cent of the project is complete. On August 13, the BMC opened northbound traffic from the Coastal Road to Bandra via the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The remaining work on the Coastal Road is expected to be finished by December this year. The 10.5-km stretch has a total cost of Rs 13,983 crore, with construction having begun in October 2018. Rs 13,983crCost of the 10.5-km Coastal Road stretch
