LITTLE did 17-year-old Marshida Valmiki know that his vacation to the big city would result in a trip to the hospital.

On Saturday, while crossing the road at Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), a speeding car collided with Marshida, throwing him off the road and landing him in the hospital.

And while the teen fights for his life in the hospital, the driver responsible for the accident was released on bail. According to the police, the car belonged to a famous builder in the city.

Recounting the accident, the driver Ramchandra Shetap said, "It was raining and I did not see the boy crossing the road. I was headed towards BKC and was travelling at 40 kmph.

Once I realised that I had run into the boy, a passerby helped me to take him to a nearby hospital. I first rushed him to Guru Nanak Hospital, and after first aid was administered to him he was referred to Bhabha Hospital."

Shetap added that Marshida's condition worsened later owing to which he was shifted to KEM Hospital. Marshida's father Timraj told MiD DAY that currently his son was in the intensive care unit.

In a state of shock, Timraj said, "Marshida had come to Mumbai last week on vacation and was planning to return home on Tuesday. On Saturday, I received a call from my elder son around 7.00 pm telling me that Marshida had met with an accident.

Timraj also added that he would like to thank the people who rushed Marshida to the hospital. "Thank you to those who brought Marshida to the hospital. If it weren't for them, I doubt if Marshida would have survived," he said with tears rolling from his eyes.

Confirming the accident, Sub-Inspector Tukaram Khirari, Bandra-Kurla Complex police station said, "The accident occurred in the evening and as soon as we were intimated we arrested the driver from KEM Hospital under Section 279 and 338 (rash driving and causing grievous hurt by act endangering life) of the Indian Penal Code. Half an hour later, he was released on bail."
