Abandoned by husband again, cancer patient goes into shock

There seems to be no respite for a 26-year-old cancer patient, who was thrown out of her house in Kanpur by her in-laws after her diagnosis. Jennifer Rizvi is currently admitted in the ICU of Tata Memorial Hospital in critical condition: she is in shock because her husband abandoned her a second time.

The mother of two lived with her husband, Mehtab Rizvi, and in-laws in Kanpur since 2007. Jennifer’s family claims that her in-laws had physically and mentally tortured her for seven years, and it only got worse for her after she gave birth to her daughters.

Once she was diagnosed with throat cancer, her in-laws kicked them out. Her husband brought her and their daughters to Mumbai and left them at her parents’ house in Grant Road (‘Mother of two girls thrown out of home for having cancer’, August 2, mid-day). Depressed by his daughter’s condition, Jennifer’s father Iqbal died of a heart attack.

Her family says that after repeated requests, Mehtab finally came to Mumbai on November 3 to be with his wife and kids. He also signed an affidavit stating that he would take care of her expenses, and then took her to Bhiwandi to the house of one of his relatives.

But 10 days later, on November 13, he took her back to her parents’ house in Grant Road. As they got down at the bus stop, he told her he would see her after finishing some work. Jennifer’s brother Parvez said, “My sister suspected that he might leave her and she told him to come home as soon as possible. But Mehtab did not return, nor did he answer his phone.”

After being betrayed by her husband again, Jennifer went into shock and had to be admitted in the ICU. Doctors say her condition is critical. Parvez said, “I will do everything in my power to bring justice to my sister. Our family is with her and we pray to God that she recovers soon. But now we want severe action to be taken against her husband. This is an extremely inhuman act.”

Jennifer’s family had earlier registered a case with D B Marg police against her husband and his parents under sections 498 (enticing or taking away or detaining a married woman with criminal intent) and 406 (criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code.

While the police here say that they have transferred the case to Kanpur, when this reporter got in touch with police officials there, they claimed to have no knowledge of the case.
