The Mumbai police and the Commissioner made their first appearance on Twitter on Monday; cops hope this move will help them quell the rumour mongering that usually creates law and order problems

The Mumbai police made its debut on the micro-blogging platform Twitter by launching its official twitter handle @MumbaiPolice and @CPMumbaiPolice yesterday. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launched the accounts at the Mumbai Police headquarters.

Several celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Sachin Tendulkar, Priyanka Chopra, Harsha Bhogle, Farhan Aktar and MLA Ashish Shelar welcomed the police force on Twitter. The handle, which was launched with the aim of making the city safer, was being planned for the last three months.

'Vibrant form'
"This will be a very vibrant form of media. We will take people's feedback as well as reply to their queries and solve their problems," said Deven Bharti, joint commissioner of police (Law and Order) Mumbai Police.

"For the first three months, the Twitter handle will be managed by a private firm who will also train our employees. Later, our Social Media Laboratory will manage it," Bharti added.

After the launch, the police have already started getting people's grievances. The complainants have been guided to the necessary officers. "We will communicate, interact, take feedback, solve problems and inform people through these handles," said Dhanajay Kulkarni, deputy commissioner of police and Mumbai police's spokesperson.

Right place, right time
Trivone Digital Services will be operating the handle for the first three months, after which the Social Media Laboratory will take over. "We approached Mumbai Police with the idea just when they were contemplating starting it. We discussed the issues and realised that there could be huge traffic on the handle as the city has taken to social media in a big way. It was finalised that the handle could work with the sole aim of keeping the city safe and problem free," said Sanchika Pandey, ex-employee of Trivone Digital, who co-ordinated with the police to start the handle.

The Delhi Police, Bengaluru police and Goa police are already on Twitter. "The Mumbai police were late, as most of the time such online mediums become more of a complaint box and people even abuse the cops through it. But as social media has become very active, we should have been there to solve people's problems and stop the rumour mongering that creates law and order issues," said a senior police officer.
