Working towards its goal of vaccinating the city’s entire population with at least one dose by the end of September, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has managed to give a single shot to 93 per cent of its citizens till date. Of the 10.80 lakh adult population, 10.03 lakh have received their first jab. The authorities said that if they receive adequate stock, they will be able to achieve their target.

Meanwhile, about 43 per cent of the entire population has been fully vaccinated till now. “We have 100 vaccination centres ready to administer the maximum number of doses in a day. Recently we vaccinated 35,000 citizens in a day. If we get an adequate number of doses, we can accelerate the vaccination drive and give 50,000 doses per day,” said an NMMC health department official. “Currently, the daily vaccination numbers vary due to an uneven supply,” he added.
New goal
Initially, the NMMC had resolved to vaccinate 8 lakh adults by the end of July 2021, but due to short supply they managed to achieve it by the end of August. Now they plan to vaccinate the entire adult population with at least one dose by the end of September.

“In the recent past, we received a good supply of vaccines and it gave the drive a boost. If we get such supply for the next 10 days, we can vaccinate the eligible population with at least one dose by the end of September,” said Dr. Ratnaprabha Chavhan, head of vaccination programme in NMMC.
43% fully vaccinated
As of September 20, 4,58,195 citizens have received both the doses of Covid-19 vaccine. The authorities assured that once the whole population gets vaccinated with one dose, the drive for administering the second shot would pick up speed.
‘It is assuring’
Speaking to mid-day, NMMC Commissioner, Abhijit Bangar said, “The number is certainly assuring, and we have the capacity to vaccinate 50,000 people per day, but it totally depends on the supply. Once all Navi Mumbai citizens get their first vaccine dose, we will relax the criteria of prioritising NMMC residents and continue giving first doses.”
