8 days on, still no sign of missing Mumbai cop

If the city police cannot trace their own man, then Mumbaikars who go missing must truly be at God’s mercy.

Police Sub-Inspector Sanjay Vitthal Chavan had gone missing on November 2 and mid-day had reported his disappearance (‘Cop from Cuffe Parade police station goes missing after DCP’s negative remark’, November 5). Eight days on, the Cuffe Parade and Nagpada police still don’t have a clue about his whereabouts. The police said Chavan had left his cellphone at home, making the search difficult.

The 42-year-old PSI had told his wife that he was going to office (Cuffe Parade Police station) on November 2, but he neither reached his office, nor came back home.

“We went to his native place in Vele, Satara, where his father and mother stay with his sister-in-law, but did not find anything. He had told some people that he wanted peace and might go to Jejuri, Pune, which is famous for the temple of Khandoba. Our teams went there as well, but could not find him,” said Sharad Borse, senior police inspector of Cuffe Parade police station.

Chavan had received a negative mark on his progress sheet on November 1 and was tense, thinking it could ruin his career. “We have sent teams to Trimbakeshwar, Nashik, as he had spoken about that place as well,” said Borse.

Chavan’s wife said he might have gone somewhere to seek peace and quiet as he had not given leave from office for a long time and was frustrated.
