In a first, the Central Railway (CR) has set up ‘Restaurant on Wheels’ at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). The restaurant coach mounted on the rails is located at the open-air heritage museum gully, close to platform no. 18.

The restaurant will be a fine-dining place offering a unique experience to diners and will accommodate 40 patrons inside the coach with 10 tables. “The interior of the restaurant has been decorated in such a way that passengers, as well as the public can enjoy the experience of dining in a rail-themed setting,” Central Railway chief public relations officer Shivaji Sutar said.

The 'Restaurant on Wheels' is set up under the "Innovative Ideas" catering policy.

"The license period is one year and extendable based on the performance. The licensee will also be responsible to maintain the approach corridor or the surrounding at their own cost," Sutar added.

Compliance of Food Adulteration Act and other statutory laws are to be adhered by the licensee. Keeping in mind the safety aspect, eight portable fire extinguishers have been installed with staff having knowledge of operation of the equipment. The validity of the extinguishers shall be obtained from time-to-time and regular inspection will be done by Railway officials.

Rates and menu of the Restaurant will be decided by licensee as per the market rates approved by the Railways. The restaurant will offer north, South, continental and other cuisines. It will be open for passengers and general public as well.

The restaurant will adhere to existing Covid-19 guidelines by Government for restaurants as on date.

Shri AK Lahoti, General Manager, Central Railway inspected the “Restaurant on Wheels” at CSMT Station on Monday.

Central Railway plans to explore the possibility of opening similar restaurants at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, Kalyan, Neral, Lonavala and Igatpuri.

Tenders have been awarded at six  locations including CSMT. 5 other locations are Nagpur, Akurdi, Chinchwad, Baramati and Miraj stations.
