Cops had filed an accidental death report when the woman's body was found in Pant Nagar on Jan 1; but autopsy has revealed that she was raped and hit on head
Two days after the Pant Nagar police recovered the body of a 55-year-old ragpicker, investigations revealed that the woman was gang-raped and then killed by the rapists. The body was spotted by ragpickers early in the morning on January 1 near a bus depot in Ghatkopar (East).

After they reported the incident, the police registered the case as an accidental death report. But, the post-mortem reports revealed that the woman had been sodomised by more than one man. They also stated that she had received two major injuries on her head, which led to her death.
The police then realised that she had been murdered by the rapists to destroy the evidence. After that, they registered a case of rape and murder. Following the revelation, Deputy Commissioner of Police Mahesh Ghurey formed a team consisting of two assistant commissioners of police, four inspectors, three assistant inspectors and several constables.
An officer working on the case said, “Looking at the bruises on her body and other evidence, it is suspected that more than one person is involved in the crime.” The unidentified accused have been booked under sections 376 (rape), 377 (unnatural offences) and 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
Police sources said that three individuals were detained before by the police team, while a fourth one, who had gone missing since the time the incident took place, was held last night. The police officials said the four had been working as mechanics in a garage in the Ghatkopar bus depot area. The victim had been living alone in Ghatkopar, while her son, who is also a ragpicker, lives in Mumbra with their other family members. He used to visit her occasionally.
