Mumbai: A 30-year-old man created a flutter when he attempted suicide inside a courtroom by slashing his throat while the proceedings were on here today.

Jigar Makwana slashed his throat with a blade in the Bandra court in the suburbs during a hearing in a criminal case in which his brother had been arrested, police said.

The court proceedings were stopped for a while and Makwana, a Santacruz resident, was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors said he was out of danger.

Makwana was present in the court as his brother had been arrested in a criminal case arising out of a property dispute along with 24 others on June 10. All accused were in police custody and produced in the court at the end of their remand period, said senior Inspector of suburban Khar Police station Duttatrey Bhargude.

"All accused were produced in the court. During the hearing, Makwana wanted to plead something on behalf of his brother but the Judge ignored his plea and sent his brother in judicial custody. It seems he got very upset and resorted to this act of slashing his throat," he said.

Since attempt to commit suicide is no longer a crime, police were not registering any offence against Makwana, Bhargude said.
