Since Pokhrankar remained absent from work yesterday, his superiors tried getting in touch with him but all their calls and messages went unanswered. Suspecting something amiss, the officials asked a police constable, who lives in the same quarters, to check on him. When the constable reached Pokhrankar’s place, no one answered the door. He informed the Wadala TT police station and broke open the door, only to find the sub-inspector hanging from the fan.

Pokhrankar was rushed to the civic-run Sion Hospital nearby, where he was declared dead on arrival. A post-mortem was conducted in the hospital. An officer from Wadala TT police station said, “Pokhrankar committed suicide by hanging himself in his police quarters in Sion. The reason for his death is yet to be ascertained. He was unmarried and was originally from Sangli.”

Police sources, however, claimed that Pokhrankar was under scrutiny for one of the cases he was handling in Gamdevi police station, which led to him to take this extreme step. “He was brought to the hospital around 3.30 pm. However, it was too late by then,” said Dr Rajesh Dere, professor of the forensic department at the hospital.

Dr Suleman Merchant, head of radiology department and acting dean of Sion hospital said, “There is an urgent need to spread awareness about the tell-tale signs of depression to prevent similar incidents from taking place. It is alarming to see these “copycat suicides” and the media can play an important role in reducing such cases.”

“The warning signs of suicide are talking about feeling hopeless or having no purpose and even symptoms like feeling trapped or acting reckless or anxious.

Suicide prevention helplines should be contacted immediately if one has any suicidal thoughts,” he added.
