Police arrested a 26-year-old man for stealing from the house of a retired army captain in Vikhroli; the accused already had over a dozen cases lodged against him
The police have finally managed to catch a thief they had been after for quite some time. The Vikhroli police nabbed a thief for stealing cash and valuables from a retired Indian Army captain. The theft occurred on the night of October 22 at the house of Dilip Kopikar, a resident of Tagore Nagar in Vikhroli. The 65-year-old man and his wife were sleeping in their room. The family also owns a dog.

When the thief sneaked into the house, the dog was sleeping under the bed and surprisingly, didn’t wake up. The next morning, Kopikar found that he was missing Rs 45,000 in cash, his debit card and two laptops. He immediately registered a complaint with the Vikhroli police station. Later in the day, the retired army man received a message on his mobile phone stating that Rs 11,500 had been withdrawn from his bank account. Kopikar had written the PIN number on the back of his ATM card.u00a0
“We immediately checked the three different ATMs in Bhandup, Mulund and Dombivli from where the withdrawals had been made,” said Anil Galinde, police inspector at the Vikhroli police station. When officials checked the CCTV footage in the ATMs, they identified the thief, Shiva Tur Amavas, a 26-year-old man who already had 15 cases of robbery and theft registered against him. Police had arrested him several times in the past.
Two constables were sent to Amavas’s house in Vikhroli, where neighbours told them he had moved to Ambernath. On October 30, he was arrested from his residence in Ambernath. But Amavas refused to have committed the crime. “Only when we showed him the CCTV footage did he confess to the act,” said Mahipat Indalkar, senior PI at Vikhroli police station. The accused was charged under Section 379 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code. He has been remanded to police custody till November 4.u00a0
