After starting work on sharply increasing the frequency of harbour line trains, the Central Railway (CR) is now planning to introduce 12-car trains on the route.

Said Sriniwas Mudgerikar, chief public relations officer (CPRO), CR, "Twelve-car trains have a capacity of accommodating almost 33 per cent more crowd than the nine- car ones."u00a0u00a0

Mudgerikar said the CR forwarded the proposal for the harbour Line to the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd (MRVC) a few days back. "We are waiting for the MVRC's nod," he added.

He, however, warned that the results wouldn't be instantaneous. "If the proposal is accepted, it will take almost two years to make it happen," he said. CR will need the time to increase the length of the platforms on the harbour line.

Meanwhile, CR is re-spacing the distance between signals on the harbour line (from CST to Panvel), so that they can run a train every 3.5 minutes on the route. "The work has begun and is expected to be completed by the end of 2009," said Mudgerikar.

Harbour line commuters get a train every 4.5 to 5 minutes currently.
