Police have arrested a 60-year-old self-styled godman in Maharashtra's Thane district for allegedly raping a woman under the pretext of ridding her of evil spirits and sufferings, an official said on Tuesday, reported PTI.

The 35-year-old woman from Bhayander area here had approached the man following which he took advantage of her situation and allegedly raped her on various occasions from 2016 under the pretext of helping her, the official from Bhayander police station told PTI.

The woman later realised she was cheated on false promises and lodged a police complaint, he said. Based on the complaint, the police arrested the accused on Monday and booked him under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman, Evil, and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, the official said.

Earlier on June 8, the father of an 18-year-old student who was raped and murdered inside her room at a government hostel in south Mumbai sought probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), reported the PTI. According to the police, a laundry man who also worked as a security guard raped and strangled the woman inside her room on the fourth floor of the hostel. He subsequently committed suicide by jumping in front of a train on the nearby railway tracks, police said, as per the PTI. The woman's family members, who had initially refused to accept her body, collected it later on. "There should be an impartial CBI enquiry. We do not find the current investigation to be impartial," the woman's father, a resident of Akola district in eastern Maharashtra, told reporters, according to the PTI.

In another case, as reported on June 13, a 24-year-old man was arrested by the crime branch of Mumbai Police for allegedly raping a woman under the pretext of marriage, an official said. The accused met the woman at a wedding in Uttar Pradesh and later became friends with her on Instagram, he said. The accused, a resident of Mumbra in the neighbouring Thane district, is arrested from the Manish Market locality in south Mumbai after the police monitored his movements for three days, the official said.  "He contacted the woman last month when she was visiting the residence of her brother in Nalasopara in the Palghar district. They met at Dadar in Mumbai and visited various places in the city. He then took her to a lodge and had sex with her promising marriage. He paid money to the woman for taxi fare and asked her to leave," the official said quoting the FIR. Later, the victim confided in her family members, following which a case was lodged at Nalasopara police station.
