Thane: Petro and chemical products found illegally stored in godowns; FIR against three

A case has been registered against three persons, including a tanker driver, for allegedly storing hazardous chemical and petroleum products in godowns sans permission in Bhiwandi city in Maharashtra's Thane district, police told new agency PTI on Saturday.


Nobody has been arrested so far after the products, worth more than Rs 1.80 crore, were found stored in metal and plastic drums on Friday in Itadkarwadi area during inspection, reported PTI.


The alleged accused are involved in handling and transportation of chemical/petroleum products without due permit, police told PTI.


A case has been registered under sections 285 (Negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter) and 286 (Negligent conduct with respect to explosive substance) of the Indian Penal Code, the Environment Protection Act, the Manufacture, Storage and Imports of Hazardous Chemicals Rules, and the Petrochemical Act. Further investigation is underway, reported PTI.

Meanwhile, a 44-year-old Nigerian national was arrested for alleged possession of cocaine and mephedrone worth Rs 84.85 lakh in Navi Mumbai, police told PTI on Saturday.

The police intercepted the accused Julius O Anthony Onyekachukwu at Ulve around 4 pm on Friday and recovered 706 gm of mephedrone and 95 gm of cocaine from him, an official told PTI.

The entire contraband is worth Rs 84.85 lakh, the official told PTI.

A case under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered against the accused, and the NRI police are probing to find out where the drugs were sourced from and who the accused's customers were, the official told PTI.

Meanwhile, a special court in Maharashtra's Thane district sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping his minor daughter. Special judge D S Deshmukh on Friday convicted the 31-year-old accused of charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for raping his daughter who was six years old at the time of the assault.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 9,000 on the accused. Special public prosecutor Sandhya H Mhatre informed the court that the accused, a resident of Kalwa, raped his daughter on December 2, 2017, and warned her not to tell anyone about the assault.
