Two jewellery shop employees were recently arrested from West Bengal for stealing gold worth Rs 22 lakh from a Dadar-based shop. The accused had, after committing the theft, called the shop owner to inform him about the theft and allegedly threw a challenge saying the police won’t be able to catch them. The police have also nabbed the mastermind from Mumbai.

As per Bhoiwada police, jeweller Akram Ali Shaikh had approached them on November 25 to register a case of theft against two of his employees for stealing around 20 tola of gold from his shop in Naigaon, Dadar. Shaikh had further said that the two accused were referred by one Asit Singh, 24, whom he had met a few years ago in Zaveri Bazar. Shaikh was allegedly in need of employees when he got in touch with Singh seeking reference, leading to Pradip Astomanna, 30, and S K Abdul Mansur Ali, 35, starting to work at his shop on November 23.

After receiving the complaint, DCP Vijay Patil formed a team led by PSI Sameer Abhang to probe the case. While both the accused changed their SIMs, police officers managed to track them using the IMEI number of the phones and traced them to a place in West Bengal which falls under the jurisdiction of Aram Bagh police.

The team then left for West Bengal and nabbed Astomanna from a tea shop on December 12. Astomanna led the cops to Ali. During interrogation, the accused revealed that Asit Singh had planned the theft and sent them over to Shaikh’s shop, following which Singh too was arrested on December 16.

Police officers also found that both the accused had submitted fake Aadhaar cards to Shaikh in a bid to conceal their real identity. Astomanna’s real name is Anup Pramanik while that of Ali is Mohammad Mobin Shah.

An officer from Bhoiwada police station told mid-day both the accused were deep in debt, which led them to take part in Singh’s plan.

Senior Inspector Jitendra Pawar said, “These people had planned the crime, made fake names and Aadhaar cards. We recovered 18 tola gold and arrested all three. The court has remanded them in police custody till December 23.”
