A Vasai court on Friday remanded Axis Bank manager Anil Dube, accused of killing his former colleague and injuring another inside an ICICI Bank branch, in judicial custody for 14 days. Dube was caught moments after he took away over Rs 3 crore in cash and gold from his former workplace in Virar last week.

Investigation so far has revealed that Dube was neck-deep in debts and didn’t intend to rob the bank in the first place. He had misappropriated Rs 26 lakh from Axis Bank where he worked as a manager at its Naigaon branch.

Of the stolen amount, Dube deposited Rs 10 lakh in one of his bank accounts through eight transactions in the morning of July 29. However, the amount was automatically adjusted against some withdrawals he had made earlier. Frustrated at losing the money, he chose to target his earlier office, the police said.

Dube was nabbed after cashier Shraddha Devrukhkar raised an alarm and alerted passersby despite being grievously injured. Following his arrest, Axis Bank carried out an audit which led to the discovery of a shortfall of Rs 26.84 lakh.

A police officer from Virar police station said their Waliv peers have registered a case against Dube on a complaint by Axis Bank.

As per the police, Dube had invested in several businesses, the stock market, and an online trading platform but suffered huge losses. He was aware of the lax security at the ICICI Bank branch at a particular time and approached manager Yogita Chaudhary under the pretext of discussing a job switch with her. In his attempt to loot, he stabbed Chaudhary to death.
