The cyber cell of Mumbai Police has arrested a 25-year-old man who allegedly supplied SIM cards to gangs that cheat people through fake insurance policies.

According to the police, the accused, Vikram Kumar Baburam is a resident of Ghaziabad.

The officers said Vikram used to provide SIM cards to cyber criminals.

Complaint against fake-insurance gang

“In June we had received a complaint from a 73-year-old retired man about him being conned of Rs 18 lakhs through fake insurance,” an official said.

As per the statement, the complainant had received a call from a person posing as an insurance agent. He took a policy in the name of his grandson.

Later the accused inquired about the complainant’s current insurance policies. In the pretext of offering him interest-free loan and processing charges, the accused duped him of Rs 18 lakh.

Further, the papers he received for his grandson’s insurance policy turned out to be forged. He then filed a complaint.

“In June we registered a case under sections 419, 420, 466, and 471 of the IPC and IT act and began the investigation,” an official said.

Fake SIM card seller intercepted

While investigating the case, the police traced the calls received by the complainant to Ghaziabad. On verifying the numbers the police found that several SIM cards were bought on the names of people who currently don’t use their numbers. On searching the CCTVs of the shops, the police intercepted Vikram.

On 19, August Vikram was arrested. He was brought to Mumbai on Sunday and was presented in court which remanded him to police custody till August 26.

"We found out that Vikram used to buy SIM cards using the identity of various people and then give those cards to gangs who conned people over the phone," said another police officer.
