A woman who had left her family to marry a man from Dahisar in 2019 was on Wednesday kidnapped by her mother, aunt and a man who wanted to marry her. They were caught from Satara, while on their way to Tamil Nadu, hours after her husband informed the police.

On Wednesday, Paul Singh Nadar approached the Dahisar police alleging that his wife, Mariya Nadar, was kidnapped by her family. Mariya hails from Tamil Nadu, police said. Police examined the CCTV camera recordings of all the roads leaving Mumbai. They traced their vehicle to Satara and with the help of local police, Dahisar officers nabbed the accused.

They arrested the mother, Koil Ammal Devendra, 46, aunt Ponnu Tai, 43, Arun Devendra, 26, and their driver Nadar Swami, 30, on the charge of kidnapping. Devendra, who is a police constable in Tamil Nadu, wanted to marry Mariya.

Mariya married Paul, 30, in Mumbai on October 22, 2019, said police sources. The couple initially settled down in Dahisar, but has been living in Nalasopara now.

The mother told the police that they came to Mumbai on finding out that Mariya had come here. She called Mariya and asked to meet her at Dahisar. After reaching Dahisar, Mariya learnt that they had come to take her back to their village and sent Paul a message. Following which, she was rescued.

The accused were on Thursday produced in court, which remanded them in police custody.
