Two people waiting at a BEST bus stop died in a hit-and-run case at Everard Nagar near Chunabhatti on Monday morning. Cops have tracked the driver, a 17-year-old from Nehru Nagar, Kurla, who had taken out the car for a joyride and dumped it after the accident. The minor has been booked and will be produced before the juvenile justice board today.

The accident took place when the speeding car rammed into the two victims at the north-bound lane around 8 am. Traffic cops from the Chunabhatti division rushed to the spot and took the injured to nearby Sion hospital. “Both of them were declared dead on arrival by doctors,” said Deepak Bagul, in-charge, Chunabhatti Traffic division.

He added, “Our staff also found a silver car abandoned at a distance from the spot of the accident. We then informed the Chunabhatti police about the incident.”

According to Chunabhatti police, one of the deceased has been identified as Babasaheb Kale, 55. “He is a resident of Vashi Naka, Chembur and worked as a contractual security guard at Chunabhatti pump house. He was heading home after finishing night duty when the accident took place,” said a police officer. The other deceased, aged around 60, is yet to be identified.

“The car we found belongs to a Pune-based man who said he gave the car to his relatives a year and half ago,” said Rajendra Gaikwad, in-charge, Chunabhatti Police station, adding, “The minor accused was on a joyride with his friend when he lost control.”
