Government Railway Police (GRP) in Wadala has arrested a 39-year-old man for allegedly pushing his live-in partner out of a moving local train. The incident occurred on the afternoon of January 11 near Govandi station.

The accused is identified as Anwar Ali Sheikh, a resident of Mankhurd.

An eyewitness alerted the cops at the railway station, resulting in immediate arrest of the accused.

Sangita Bhalerao, a housemaid, resident of Mankhurd was returning home from her workplace in Churchgate on Monday afternoon. She took a local from Harbour line from Kurla railway station. A while later, she noticed a man standing at the gate along with a woman and a little girl.

“The man was leaning out of the door. He then hugged the woman and before the she could fathom what was going on, he unwrapped his arms and the woman fell on the tracks” revealed Sangita in her statement to cops. “I shouted at him and rushed to the door, but nobody could spot her” she added.

When locals approached Govandi railway station, passengers at the coach alerted the cops. The accused was immediately arrested. Meanwhile, the victim was found lying in a nullah between the tracks. She was rushed to hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.

“The accused is in police custody now. The accused and deceased lived together with her daughter and had an altercation before the crime” he added.

Poonam Chauhan had gone with Anwar and her daughter to Wadi Bunder to meet her mother and sister amid their domestic disputes. Primary investigation has revealed that Anwar’s unemployment led to frequent altercations between the couple.

Poonam and her daughter were living with Anwar for a couple of years after the death of her husband. Anwar and Poonam were not a married couple but had a live-in relationship.

“We have arrested the accused under IPC section 302 (murder),” told Senior Inspector Hamraj Kumbhar of Wadala GRP.
