Mumbai crime: A woman was allegedly duped of lakhs of rupees after a man, posing as a cop reached out to her and told her that her official government document had been misused, an official said on Thursday.

The police said, the fraudster, pretending to be Deputy Commissioner of Police of Mumbai Cyber Cell branch and an officer of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) contacted the woman and then extorted Rs 5.85 lakhs from her.
"The Vanrai police in Goregaon have registered a case against an unknown person in the matter case and have began the investigations in the case," a police official said.
According to the police sources, the woman who is an engineer by profession lives in Goregaon area and she works at a senior position in a private firm.
The said, around two days ago she received a call from an unknown phone number. She was told her Aadhaar card number. The caller then told her that her call was being connected to the 'NCB' pretending to have received a complaint about misuse of her government document.
The woman later received an identity card which read- a name of a cop and it mention the designation as 'Police Inspector, Cyber Cell'. She was asked to send her social media ID too, sources added.
The deputy commissioner's identity card was sent to the woman on Skype to ensure her trust. The fraudster asked the woman for her bank account details. The fraudster pretended to tell the woman that 98,997 was the 'NCB' code and if she would need to send it to him. After some time the woman was sent a letter on Skype mentioning a case number, police sources further added.
Fearing action, the woman sent Rs 5 lakh 85 thousand from a relative's account to various bank accounts of the caller, the police said.
It said that when the woman's husband came home, she informed him about the incident. Her husband told her that no deputy commissioner in 'NCB' asks to send money over the phone. The woman then realised that she was duped by a fraudster. She then rushed to the Vanrai police station and filed a complaint in the matter.
"Based on the woman's complaint, a case has been registered and it is further being investigated," said an officer from Vanrai police station.
