A 35-year-old woman from Borivli lost Rs 1 lakh after she scanned QR codes sent by a person who wanted to rent her flat at Gorai.

In her complaint, the victim said the fraudster got in touch with her after she put up an advertisement for the apartment on social media on May 27.

The man said he worked for the Indian Army and agreed to pay a monthly rent of Rs 16,000 and Rs 1 lakh deposit.

While the complainant wanted the money through a particular digital payment system, the man told her that his service rules did not permit him to have that app on his phone. He then sent her a QR code through WhatsApp and asked her to scan it.

Once she scanned it, Re1 was credited to her account. The man then sent her another QR for what he said was for Rs 50,000. But this time the money got debited from her account. The man told her there must have been a technical glitch. He then sent her Rs 50 through a code but withdrew Rs 50,000 with another.

The man then wanted her bank details, but she grew suspicious and approached the police. “We are trying to identify the con,” said an officer from MHB police station.
