The Kasturba Marg police have arrested a 31-year-old man who allegedly used to steal imported bikes and cheat people on the pretext of selling and buying the two-wheelers through ads on e-commerce platforms. While the cops have recovered five bikes from him, the latest case was reported from Borivli East where he escaped with a high-speed Benelli bike worth R7 lakh on the pretext of going on a trial ride.

The accused has been identified as Arshad Khan alias Shoeb alias Ansari, an AC mechanic residing in Mahim. Sources revealed that Arshad was fond of riding expensive bikes, so he used to post ads on a website as a seller of two-wheelers and then cheat buyers. Sometimes he would also pose as the buyer and escape with bikes on the pretext of going on a trial ride.
A cable businessman living in Borivli East had put his high-speed Benelli bike for sale on a website. The accused contacted him on May 27 and later on the pretext of the trial, he escaped with the vehicle.
“The victim approached the Kasturba Marg police station and registered a complaint,” said an officer.
“We started the investigation with the help of CCTV footage and call data records and arrested the accused on Tuesday. The bike has also been recovered. During interrogation the accused confessed to have committed similar crimes in Juhu and Mahim, after which four more bikes were recovered,” the officer added.
“He has been booked and arrested under section 406 of IPC. After being produced in court he was remanded in police custody till June 10,” he added.
