Mumbai Crime: 5 of a family held for theft in jewellery shops across Maharashtra

According to police sources, on January 13, this family stole 45-gram gold ornaments worth Rs 1.9 lakh from Mayur jewellery shop at Kurar village area.

The Kurar police arrested five members of a family and a taxi driver for theft in jewellery shops across Maharashtra. The family used to enter the jewellery shop together and steal ornaments after diverting the attention of the owner and shop workers. More than 50 cases have been registered against the family in Maharashtra.


According to police sources, on January 13, this family stole 45-gram gold ornaments worth Rs 1.9 lakh from Mayur jewellery shop at Kurar village area at around 2 pm.



The family entered the shop together and asked the salesman to show ornaments. As the salesman got busy in showing the jewellery, one of the family members stole parts of the jewellery set. Later, the family left the shop saying they did not like the jewellery.


During the closing time, the shop owner realised that a gold chain and a mangalsutra was missing and found out about the theft after checking the CCTV footage.

With the help of the CCTV footage, senior inspector Prakash Bale, API GS Gharge and their team traced and caught all the six accused from Pune and different districts of Maharashtra. Those arrested are two brothers, their parents and daughter-in-law. Three more family members are on the run. Taxi driver Narendra Salunkhe (35) was also arrested.

Senior inspector Prakash Bele said that more than 50 cases have been registered against the family across Maharashtra. “They were arrested from Bhosri, Dighi, Manjhari, Hadapsar, Bibve wadi, and Katraj area. They have also committed similar offences in Mumbai, Telangana and Raipur,” said the police.

All the accused were arrested between January 19 and 22 under Sections 380 (robbery) and 34(crime committed more than 2 people) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
