Day after horrific murder, police say they reached spot, but family stopped them at the gate and told them the issue was resolved

Record has shown that the Mulund couple, who beat a 69-year-old cook to death for allegedly molesting their daughter, had lied about the police response to their call to the control room. Police on Tuesday said that the husband turned the cops away saying the matter was resolved.

The couple, who were arrested on Monday, had claimed that no officer showed up after they called the police control room to file a complaint against Abdul Khalil Sheikh. Police, however, said that when officers went to their home, the father refused to file a complaint and turned them away. And all this while, the man was tied up in a room.

“After his call, Mulund police did arrive at the building and contacted the caller. The father came downstairs and told officers that the matter has been sorted and they don’t need to worry,” said an officer from Mankhurd police station. “We are going to register statements of the neighbours who might have heard the cries of Sheikh. That would be evidence against the accused,” said Inspector Adinath Gawade.
The couple had gone out to sell fish on January 1, and asked Sheikh to babysit their two children--a 12-year-old daughter and a son. When they returned that night, the minor girl told them that Sheikh had molested her. The father mercilessly beat up Sheikh, and dumped his body at Sathe Nagar, Mankhurd.
He was alive in car
During the investigation, Mankhurd police found out that Sheikh was alive when he was put in the car, but succumbed to his injuries on the way. Had they taken the old man to hospital, he would have lived, said an officer.
Police said that after beating up Sheikh, the couple first decided to take him to his daughter’s home in Shivaji Nagar. On the way, Sheikh pleaded with the couple to take him to hospital instead, but he didn’t listen. Moments later, the elderly man stopped, and scared, the duo abandoned him in Mankhurd. Both are in police custody until January 10.
