Cops scan CCTVs for 96 hrs; find stolen machine

Vaibhav Thorve, the accused

After scanning more than 45 CCTV cameras, the Aarey police traced a 26-year-old man who had robbed the survey machine, used for Metro construction, last week. Many important works of the Metro project were stalled due to the theft of the survey machine.

After 96 hours of non-stop work, the Aarey police traced the accused, identified as Vaibhav Thorve, and arrested him from the Mahakali Caves area of Andheri East. The police recovered the stolen machine, which the accused had hidden in the Aarey jungle. The incident came to light on February 7, when the officials at the Metro site noticed that the ground survey machine of the Eagle Infra India was missing.

45 footage scanned

The case was solved under the supervision of senior inspector Ulhas Kholam and Sachin Panchan, along with their detection staff. The team scanned over 45 CCTV camera footage between Aarey to Seepz area for more than 96 hours continuously. “With the help of Drum Data (publicly available collection of digital research data) of Thorve’s mobile phone and with the information provided by an informer, we arrested the accused on Friday,” said an officer.

“After interrogation, the accused revealed that he had hidden the machine in the Aarey forest. The accused had no idea about the value of the machine, which cost around R8 lakh. He was looking for a customer,” the officer added. The police have registered the case against the accused under Sections 461 and 37 of the Indian Penal Code. He was produced before the court on Saturday and was remanded in police custody.
