In a rather strange case, the Uttarakhand police have arrested a woman for posing as a man and marrying to other women. The woman is also alleed to have tortured one of her 'wives' for dowry.
The woman has been identified as Sweety Sen who went with the alias Krishna Sen. A report in the Hindustan Times quotes Janmejay Khanduri, Nainital’s senior superintendent of police as having stated, "he lady used to pose as a man in terms of looks and enticed women on Facebook and later married them."
Sen is reported to have hailed from Dhampur in Bijnore, U.P. She created a fake Facebook account posing as a man and chatted up several women. After telling one of the women that she was the son of a CFL bulb businessman, she married her as a man.
She then beat up her 'wife' and demanded that she pay dowry. The woman's family gave in to the fraudster's demands and gave her Rs 8.5 lakhs to set up her own factory. Meanwhile, Sen married her 'second wife', who was from from Kaladhungi, in April 2016.
After the second victim realised that Sen was not a man, Sen tried to hush her up by offering a certain amount from her profits. However the woman filed a police complaint.
The HT report quotes Khanduri as having added, "The girl from Kaladhungi came to know that Krishna was not a man, but she lured her to keep silent by promising her money. The girl from Kathgodam area lodged a report with the Haldwani Police alleging of dowry demands and threats after which the police made the arrest."
In order to avoid detection, Sen would not let either of her wives have physical contact with her. However, a medical examination ordered by the police has confirmed that 'Krishna Sen' is indeed a woman.
