Before committing suicide, Ajit Atmaram Ingale, a resident of Mangalwar Peth in Phaltan, Satara district, posted a picture of himself on Facebook, which showed the girl's name scrawled in blood on his left hand. He also put up a status that read, "I hate my life without…u..my love."
The incident took place near Gliding Centre on Hadapsar Road around 6 am on Saturday. A passerby, who was on his way for his morning walk, noticed the Maruti Omni on flames and alerted the fire brigade. The fire was brought under control within 10 minutes, but the man was charred beyond recognition.
According to Inspector RN Mohite, in-charge of Hadapsar police station, Ingale had been in love with the girl, a distant relative, since childhood. "He even proposed to the girl on many occasions, but she got married to another man in December last year. When he learnt that the girl had come to meet her parents for Gudi Padwa, he tried to meet her. When she avoided his calls, he decided to end his life," said Mohite.
Ingale was rushed to Sassoon General Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. "He sustained 100 per cent burn injuries. We suspect that he might have poured kerosene over himself before lighting the flame." The police have registered a case of suicide.
