"It is unfortunate on the part of the police to hit a girl," said SSP Kanwaljit Singh Dhillon, adding that he had placed both Davinder Singh and Saraj Singh under suspension and marked a departmental inquiry against the duo.
However, the officer said that father of the girl, Kashmir Singh was drunk and creating "nuisance" at a marriage function at Gobindwal road on Sunday night.
When police personnel reached the spot and caught hold of Kashmir, his daughter resisted, the SSP said.
Kashmir's daughter Harbinder Kaur intervened and resisted while her father was being taken away to police station, the SSP said. In the melee, the turbans (head gears) of two head constables were tossed up following which they beat the girl.
However, the girl in her complaint alleged that on Sunday night, while she along with her father was coming home after attending a marriage function a truck driver and his accomplices started to tease her besides passing vulgar comments. When she and her father approached the nearby police picket, both were beaten up by the policemen on duty, who allegedly let off the accused after accepting bribe, the girl alleged in her complaint.
However, the SSP said that father of the girl was badly drunken and manhandled the policemen who later cane charged him.
Irked by the police action, the girl (complainant) removed the turban of the two policemen, who in retaliation beat up the girl with wooden sticks, the officer said.
He said that both the constables have been suspended.
SSP said that, at the same time, fault of Kashmir Singh, father of the girl, could not be ignored as he was drunk and was the "bone of contention for creating trouble with the truck driver". Girl was also at fault who later jumped into the dispute and removed the turban of the policemen on duty, he said.
