Pune crime: Radiologist jailed for sex determination

Dr Vineet Ramkrishna Mahajan, a radiologist based in Baner, has been sentenced to six months in prison, after he was convicted by the Judicial Magistrate (First Class) K M Pingle on charges of violating the Pre- Conception Pre Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act (PCPNDTA), 1994. This is the first conviction of any doctor from Pune under the PCPNDT Act.

Dr Mahajan was running the Chikitsa Diagnostic Centre in Baner. The Pune Municipal Commissioner had received many complaints in December 2010 about sex determination being carried out Dr Mahajan’s clinic. The deputy heath chief Dr Vaishali Jadhav and her staff had raided Mahajan’s clinic in April 2011.

It was found that Mahajan was not properly filling up the sonography forms, in which there were many discrepancies. The sonography machine and all records were then sealed and seized by the PMC officials.

The court has ordered that the sealed sonography machine be auctioned and the amount received in the auction be deposited in government treasury.
