The suspects called the 23-year-old woman in February and informed her that she had won Rs 25 lakh in a lottery named Kaun Banega Crorepati, but that she would only get the money if she paid the tax
Pimpri police have booked four suspects on charges of duping a 23-year-old housewife of Rs 25,000, after telling her that she had won Rs 25 lakh in a lottery called Kaun Banega Crorepati. Complainant Pallavi Gautam Nangare (23), a resident of Subhashnagar Road in Pimpri, has filed a complaint with Pimpri police station.
Based on her complaint, the police have booked Raj Singhania and three other persons, whose identities are yet to be ascertained.
The suspects have been booked under sections 420 (cheating) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 66 (computer related offences) and 66d (cheating by personation by using computer resource) of the Information Technology Act.
Big win
According to the complaint filed by Nangare, the suspects called her up on her mobile on February 17. They told her that she had won a lottery of Rs 25 lakh in the ‘KBC’ lottery and that she needed to pay Rs 25,000 as tax. Accordingly, Nangare paid the amount in the bank account, details of which were given to her by the suspects. The suspects then contacted her again and told her that she would have to pay Rs 37,500 so that the lottery cheque could be issued in her name.
Suspicious, Nangare refused to pay the amount and demanded that the initial amount be refunded to her. When the suspects stopped responding, Nangare realised that she had been duped and approached the police on May 7. Police Inspector B B Mudiraj is investigating the case.
