Police Inspector Chandrakant Ghodke, in-charge of the anti-chain snatching squad, has now been transferred to economic offences wing while the remaining police personnel will now work in the crime control room.

Two hundred and twenty-three chain snatching incidents were reported between January to March this year. Police have been successful in solving only 20 of them. In 2013, 566 chain snatchings were reported out of which only 203 were cases solved while in 2012, a total of 479 cases were reported and 195 were solved.

The anti-chain snatching squad was formed three years ago. The main aim of this squad was to curb the rising chain-snatching crimes in the city. The squad comprised of a police inspector, one sub-inspector and 10 constables.

According to a senior Crime Branch police official, "In the recent past, the squad's functioning was reduced to only up to 'spot visits' after any chain-snatching incident was reported. The crime detection rate of the squad was also not satisfactory.

CP Mathur had warned Crime Branch officers and had asked them to conduct operations and effective 'nakabandi' exercises. The police staff of the anti-chain snatching squad was also deployed at these nakabandis and some fixed check points in the city."
