Gold biscuits weighing about 19 kg, smuggled from Sri Lanka, were seized in the district on Wednesday and two persons arrested in this connection, Customs officials said. The Rs 4.7 crore worth gold biscuits, meant to be smuggled to Thondi in Ramanathapuram district, were confiscated near Avudayar temple here.
Acting on a tip off, officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) carried out a vehicle check and intercepted two persons who came on a two-wheeler with a diesel can. During the search, they found the gold kept hidden inside the can.
The two were held on charges of smuggling the gold, DRI officials said adding further investigation was on.
