With some odd trends like string eyebrows and low-rise jeans threatening to make a comeback, a stylist lists a few fads that should stay buried and some that should make a reappearance for the sake of style, comfort and functionality

Initially, Gen-Z’s style easily became a favourite among millennials even though we struggled through uneven bumps when we tried to part our hair in the middle or thrift sweater vests in May in Mumbai. Baggy pants and mom jeans gave us structure and comfort, chunky sneakers cushioned our soles and eclectic colour palettes let us relive the looks of our favourite pop stars from the early 2000s. But we stand to lose some of this fashion grace ever since celebrities including model Bella Hadid and pop-punk singer Willow Smith have been over-plucking their eyebrows and sporting low-rise jeans. Even though they are threatening a comeback, we refuse to let these trends take over our lives again. Mumbai-based celebrity and wedding stylist Shreeja Rajgopal lists looks that should and should not be resurrected in 2023.

Functional style
Along with Rajgopal, we’ve got our fingers crossed that cargo pants are here to stay; it’s possibly the only apparel with sufficient pockets. “They are versatile, utilitarian and just the perfect blend of comfort and style. They’re also easy to dress down and dress up,” she sums up. Cargo pants with an oversized jacket will forever be this writer’s go-to when the memo calls for a relaxed yet structured look.

All that shines
Classic but not boring is what makes an iconic look. Rajgopal chooses metallic colours that can be worn in all apparel from skirts and trousers to dresses and outerwear. She says, “They make a statement no matter what you wear them with, especially if you style them with the correct accents.” Think metallic pants paired with a shimmery top. Rajgopal would like to see metallic mini skirts make a comeback this season.

Death to skinny jeans
Mumbai’s humidity and skinny jeans do not look good together. In fact, nothing pairs well with  tight jeans. “Skinny jeans are long gone and should definitely be kept aside as a trend. These days, people lean more towards comfort clubbed with style which, of course, is why baggy jeans, boot-cuts and flared denim are here to stay,” Rajgopal shares.

Lower for leggings
“Wearing leggings as a lower for anything else except kurtas is a big no,” asserts Rajgopal, and we agree. This faux pas has been missing from the scene for a while and we hope it never returns.

Sheer no more
For a no-go accessory, Rajgopal lists transparent or sheer handbags noting that they don’t offer much in terms of style or functionality. Instead, they make an appearance more cluttered and distracting.
