Wings of change

The classic cat-eye is no longer the only way to wing your eyeliner — from puppy to fox styles, 2021 is all about switching up your eyeliner shape

Wings of change

Eyeliner shape

From classic chic to all-out drama, eyeliner can transform your entire look with a few strategic flicks. As image consultant Greeshma Thampi points out, changing the shape of your eyeliner can also alter the appearance of your eyes, as per the placement of the wing. She demonstrates how you can work three of this year’s hottest eyeliner trends.

The classic cat eye
The cat eye is a classic winged shape that makes your eyes look wider and adds volume to your lashes. “The benefit of a cat eye is that it enhances the shape of your eye without the use of eye shadow. It also helps to lift your eyes, especially if you have a rounder face shape,” Thampi explains. She recommends pairing your cat eyes with a red lip for a look that oozes vintage sophistication. To know where your wing should lie, place a make-up brush against the side of your nose and point it towards the end of your eyebrow. Use this as a guide to place your wing. If you aren’t confident about your liquid eyeliner skills, you could try using a pencil first and going over this with a liquid liner.

Puppy-eyed innocence

A Korean beauty-inspired trend, puppy eyeliner is simple and clean, giving your eyes a rounded, youthful shape, says Thampi. To create this look, direct your eyeliner flick downwards, towards your cheek. Place the eyeliner with your eyes open so that you can follow the direction of your upper lid. The puppy eyeliner shape works best with wide-set eyes, and if your upper eyelids naturally slope downwards. If you have a round face, however, Thampi recommends avoiding this style. Couple this with an orange-hued blush that is placed high on your cheekbones — another popular style in Korean make-up.

Foxy and fabulous

Fox eyeliner is dramatic and gives your entire face a more lifted, ‘snatched’ look. “This style is especially well-suited for people with rounder eyes,” says Thampi. Begin by sweeping brown eye shadow through the crease of your eyes, elongating the shape upwards and outwards, towards your temples. Apply a light shimmering eye shadow from the inner to the outer corner of your eyes, and use the same colour to define your brow bone. Draw a long, sleek wing towards your temples. Go over this line with a dark eyeshadow and smudge it to enhance the mystique. For a night out, add some glitter eyeshadow to the centre of your eyelids and use highlighter in the inner corners of your eyes. For maximum impact, use at least two coats of mascara and pull your hair back into a sleek updo as this adds to the facelift-like appeal of this eyeliner shape.
