Set out on a trip to observe breeding of Olive Ridley turtles in a secluded Konkan village

Turtle tales

Hatchlings on the beach at Velas

Olive Ridley turtles seem to be caught between the devil and the deep blue sea because not only are they an endangered species, but the chances of their hatchlings surviving are also abysmal. But those that lay eggs at Velas are better off than most others. The tiny village in Ratnagiri has a lone, secluded beach that turns into a breeding ground for turtles at this time of the year. And residents keep a watch over the eggs and hatchlings, creating a sanctuary of sorts to ensure that the creatures don’t face any danger from human beings, dogs and other animals.

It makes for the perfect opportunity for Mumbaikars to witness the entire breeding process up close and personal. That’s what travel company T Trikon is offering people with a two-day trip to the Konkan village this weekend. Tour operator Eshant Saha informs us that the itinerary also includes staying in local houses since there are no hotels there; digging into home-made food and drinks like sol kadi; visiting the nearby Bankot fort that’s believed to be around 2,000 years old; and a trip to the famous Harihareshwar Temple, located right next to the beach there. “We have been organising this trip for quite a few years,” he shares, meaning that there are lots of different activities on offer, though the focus will remain on the endangered species who, like we said, are caught between a rock and a hard place.
