Watercolour paints are some of the easiest art materials to carry around and paint with on the go. With colours, paper and brushes including a water brush that comes with space in the handle to hold water, you can paint with little to no hassle or mess. The issue may come with the medium itself; an unforgiving one where washes once laid on the paper cannot be undone. Here, understanding how the medium flows becomes crucial. Artist, art educator and workshop organiser Alison Pinto notes that when one is new to the technique, the medium becomes unpredictable.

“You can’t correct a mistake by painting over it because you will lose the essence of watercolour which is transparency,” she adds. Technique and practice seem like logical efforts to invest in, but as is with creative minds, frustration and doubt might set in. Before it does, sign up for the two-day, How to paint with Freedom and Confidence workshop with watercolour master Milind Mulick that begins today. Mulick, a master watercolourist with decades of experience, is known for his landscapes, perspective on finding patterns in daily scenes and how they can be translated on paper.

Pinto, through her own experiences in furthering her craft, has identified the hesitance of beginners. “Painting with freedom will come with confidence, which will come from knowledge and practice,” she notes. Along with the basics of watercolours, day one will address theoretical and practical understanding of techniques such as washes, how to layer highlights and shadows, glazing, wet brush on wet paper, managing water versus pigment, among other topics. Colour theory, which looks at understanding how colours and shades can work together on the same page in harmony without clashing, will also be taught. Day two will usher painters to use these techniques in three paintings — a portrait, a natural landscape with a touch of abstractionism, and a cityscape. There will also be an in-depth study of colours, proportions and perspectives to ace the primary structure of the artwork.

Participants will receive access to a detailed video recording on one fundamental technique by Mulick. You can get your own art materials or buy your requirements from a Hakimi Paints stationery store at a 20 per cent discount. “We have simplified the topics into bite-sized versions so attendees can receive directions and move ahead in their practice,” Pinto signs off.
