Rajasthan folk artistes

Manganiyar musicians are a community of Rajasthani folk artistes who have put the state on the world map with their mesmerising performances. But when this writer had once attended the Rajasthan International Folk Festival in Jodhpur, a casual chat with a group of artistes had revealed that they feel short-changed by the music industry because even though they have performed multiple times globally, their financial prospects remain dire in most cases.

A music festival now hopes to mend that situation to some degree, showcasing the songs of Manganiyar maestro Gaffur Khan (in pic) and his musical group. The event is called Songs from the Soul, and will feature traditional instruments including kamaicha, a bowed instrument with 17 strings; khartaal, a type of castanet made with teak; and the dholak. The concert will be streamed online, meaning people from across the world can enjoy it. So, you can log in too, since the ticket you pay for will ensure that artistes in need of financial support get their due.
