The age of 12 is ridiculously young for a singer-songwriter to write his first original composition. But then again, starting early came naturally to Jordan Johnson since he was born into a family of musicians. "In fact, I have photos of myself as a six-month-old listening to my dad play the guitar," he says ahead of his gig at an Andheri venue tomorrow.
Now 22, Johnson adds that every step he has taken over the past decade has been aimed at fulfilling his ambition of being a full-time performer. He released his first EP when he was only 15, which was followed by an album in 2015 with the band he was playing for back then, called North. And in the meantime, he started studying sound engineering because he wanted to add the nitty-gritty of production to his musical arsenal.
That education eventually did come in handy because Johnson is now about to release a self-titled second EP, which he helped produce. "I started out as a singer-songwriter act, so that's the spine of my music," the Delhi-based youngster says, adding, "But this EP has turned into something else since I got to use the skills I learnt while studying sound engineering. So, I added synths and layers, and I chopped it up with rhythms. The genre, I believe, is folktronica, which is a mix of an acoustic vibe and heavier sounds."
He also says that he will be testing the waters with this EP at tomorrow's gig. "I am excited to have people listen to it. We [Akshay Deokuliar and Harshit Mehta, his backing musicians] have been working on it for a while. So, I am stoked that we will actually get to perform it live," he concludes.
