Cleaning out your closet? Follow Relove’s tips for grading garments for resale, donation and recycle or upcycling

Items that will go on sale

A favourite meme goes: don’t get in the way of a person rearranging furniture, they are about to change their life. The same goes for a good closet clean-out, which does more than declutter the mind; it makes space for new garments. And for brownie points or just in favour of practical sense, update your wardrobe by buying preloved items. A platform that facilitates the resale of second-hand garments, Relove, will host their upcoming preloved sale of only Zara clothing next week. After the sale left them scanning through 1,000 items received in only five days, they shared easy tips to grade and categorise clothing to help streamline the process.

Relove’s six grades include A+ for garments with tags that have not been worn, A for items that are as good as new without the tag, B for faded clothing without visible stains and C for clothes with small acceptable marks like pen ink, but not hygiene-related stains. Lastly, the categories you can include when cleaning out your closet are grade D, for the items that a buyer might not be happy spending money on, but are still in a good and wearable condition for donation, and grade E for garments that are not wearable and can be recycled or upcycled.

While segregating, don’t forget to look out for iron marks that fade the clothing, decolouration especially on whites, worn-out fabric at the seat of pants or under the arms, fabric that is stretched and stains of any kind. And when in doubt about the category, co-founder Kirti Poonia suggests, “Think if you would buy it, or be happy with wearing it.”
