Reimagine your favourite cartoon shows with this theory-based video podcast show

Offbeat theories and unknown facts about cartoons you grew up watching

The podcast theorises (right) Cubone as Charmander

Weekends for this writer sometimes means a scrolling-through-social media marathon and consuming no-brainer content. Amid reels after another of songs and dance covers, GRWM for a Sunday brunch, or shih tzus in hair ties, we chanced upon a Pokémon-related clip from a  video podcast platform The Wentworth Bros that began with a question: Did you know Nurse Joy is a Pokemon?

Naturally, we were hooked on what we thought can’t really work up our brain, but will be a fun theory to look at. The USA-based podcasters took us by the hand through their theory, as they flashed clips of Nurse Joy from the cartoon series and explained why they think so. All Nurse Joys, around thousands of them, look alike, are called the same and never age. They are supposedly blood-related, “that’s not possible unless her father’s Genghis Khan,” quips one of the two podcasters. They end the reel summarising that they are the final stage of evolution of Chansey, the nurse Pokémon.

Mind-blown by this theory, this writer was tempted to open the comment section and find out what Pokémon fans had to say about this. We kept looking for a counter-argument, but instead were given an array of theories birthed from this one. For instance, what if Nurse Joy is actually Ditto, and does that mean Officer Jenny is a Pokémon too?

This led to us rummaging through the podcasters’ feed. Their account is full of one-minute video podcasts, where they reveal theories and unknown facts of cartoons some of us have grown up watching. The hosts, Drew Wentworth (below) and Randy Wentworth, roll out at least two such videos daily, and have covered famous cartoon characters like Tom and Jerry, Sonic, Spongebob, and Mario, among others. This video podcast platform began nearly three months ago, and has more than 400 posts, 159K followers on Instagram, 750K subscribers on YouTube.

Another video that got us thinking was one where they suggest that Cubone is actually a Charmander, whose mother Charizard died, and now the defenseless Pokémon wears its mother’s skull around for protection.

While the videos are solely based on theories, we love how it let us relive and reimagine our favourite cartoon. What adds to the fun is that you can directly engage with likeminded people on the comments section, unlike a podcast on other audio-only platforms.
