Aimed to build essential sensory and motoring skills among toddlers, a three-year-old attends an interactive, engaging workshop

For toddlers, learning is important, as it develops their sensory motor skills. But how does one make unpredictable toddlers, brimming with energy and curiosity, sit at one spot and learn? The answer is to make it fun and interactive. That’s what Neha Goraksha-Bidvai, mother of a three-year-old Dev, experienced, when she signed her son up to attend a workshop in Cuffe Parade.

Building the Basics: Sensory-Motor Class, conducted by Rachna Narwekar an educator, is designed to lay a strong foundation for a child’s basic learning skills and to also improve social interaction skills. The mother was pleasantly surprised at how her young one reciprocated to various activities including stacking, sand play, story reading, creative art and pre-writing; that are especially designed for the age group of two to four years.

“It was raining cats and dogs; my son had a long day at school and we had to commute from Bandra to attend it. So, I was unsure if Dev would enter the class at all, let alone being cooperative. But to my surprise, he not only finished the class, but also participated in all the activities,” recalls Goraksha-Bidvai.
In the hour-long session, Narvekar took the participants through all the activities. She takes only five children in a batch and this time, the theme was the seahorse. In line with the theme, Dev was given a blank paper to colour it blue, followed by a sand activity, where the participating kids were given shells to mix in the sand and then, sort it out again. This made them understand concepts like how the sand flows, more and less, heavy and light, and full and empty.
“Rachna read a story about a seahorse, after which Dev was asked to stick the seahorse on the paper. So he learnt about the marine animal and was also able to integrate it in his artwork. They used dot painting techniques to create the baby seahorses on the seahorse cut out,” shares Goraksha-Bidvai.

Too young to write, participants were given different coloured pom-poms that were sorted in different bowls and were also given laminated sheets with different writing patterns. The idea was to get them to use pom-poms to create the patterns on the sheets. They used their little fingers and tongs to pick the pom-poms for exercising their muscles. These activities helped the children to improve social interaction skills in a fun way, encouraged them to explore their surroundings and interact with others; and communicate effectively.
