The Maoris in New Zealand believed tattoos to be a symbol of power, self-expression and heritage. In the modern world, this creative expression has grown in popularity. The latest Guinness Book of World Records notes the largest tattoo artwork at 79-square-feet and six-square inches in area in the USA. The tribute to rapper Takeoff was created by a team of artists on a large fold of synthetic skin to be displayed in Atlanta, USA.

But like diamonds, tattoos are forever. In view of the long-term commitment it entails, city-artists explain things to keep in mind when opting for a large tattoo design.

It is all about the idea

Large tattoos are all about ideas. The concept behind the aesthetic choice is important. It is important to take as much time as you can to finalise the design. This will ensure that the whole piece is in sync.

Homework for clients
. Do all the research you can, study the artists and review them well.
. Examine the hygiene levels in the studio and the equipment used by the artists beforehand.
. Be open with your artist. Whether that is a vacation coming up, exercise routines or food habits, inform them about it.
. Share information on any medical conditions or skin issues before starting out. Be clear on the after-care procedure.

Favourite work: It was a full back design on a visitor from Australia. It took six continuous days of 10-to-12-hour sessions. The art work, collaboration and size made it one of the more beautiful pieces.

Be clear about the concept

A tattoo is a personal thing, and clients sometimes have many ideas and inputs. When it is a larger canvas, there is more space for me to play around with — in terms of colour, elements and styles. It allows me to take creative liberties and introduce fresher takes.

Homework for clients
. Have a clear idea of your tattoo. Take your time before deciding on a style.
. Tattoos are akin to buying artwork. You must pick the right artist after careful research.
. Stay patient. Forget the pain; it is the time and commitment that will test your mental strength.

Favourite work: I recently did a full sleeve with elaborate patterns of dot work which requires time and precision. It took me seven months to complete.

Pick your story

A large tattoo is about telling a story. When the concept is clear, this becomes easy. The challenge is to explore the body frame and use it properly. Such works stay with you forever. Hence, it is essential that you take time to arrive on a design. Don’t just pick something off Pinterest.

Homework for clients
. A tattoo is a commitment in time, pain and endurance. Do not underestimate any of the factors involved.
. Allow enough time for the healing process. Avoid rushing the recovery.
. Give the artist space to express their creativity.

Favourite work: I love creating hybrid animals. My recent work was a full back tattoo that was a hybrid of a scorpion and a double-headed tiger for a former Muay Thai fighter. It was a challenge since it had symmetry and had to be placed centrally on the back.
