Baseball caps are making their presence felt on high fashion runways. Here's how you can use them to top your looks

Once preferred more for their function than form, baseball caps have gone through what social media refers to as a ‘glow up’ in recent times. Take, for instance, French fashion house Celine, which paired classic and feminine silhouettes with black baseball caps for their Spring/Summer 2021 show.

However, these aren’t the trusty nylon netted caps that kept the sun out of your eyes on the school playground. Quality materials, textured fabrics and minimalist designs have transformed these caps to a fashion-forward accessory that can even be worn to formal dinners.

>> Choose the right fabric: “Opt for uncluttered styles and luxurious fabrics such as suede, wool and corduroy. Such caps work well with classic wardrobe staples such as lightweight jackets and slim-fit chinos,” says entrepreneur Vidit Chitroda. When balanced with the right footwear (not sneakers), these outfits can look effortlessly stylish.

>> Play with contrasts: While Chitroda prefers pairing his caps with blazers worn over crisp shirts or t-shirts, fashion blogger Indu Srimal says that baseball caps can add an edge to an otherwise feminine dress or skirt. “The unexpectedness of this combination can make you stand out. However, keep your look cohesive by either opting for a monochromatic outfit or picking a cap in a colour that matches some element from the rest of your outfit,” she suggests.

>> Focus on details: Blogger Chandni Dialani highlights the importance of picking a cap that fits snugly. “Plain caps will always look much more sophisticated and can be paired with a larger section of your wardrobe - a classic black cap is a welcome addition to most looks. Hat hair is a serious consideration if you are planning to wear a cap for the better part of the day,” she warns.
